About this petition

There had been an earlier petition circulated around school last week. Both petitions are valid in their concerns, so everyone is strongly encouraged to sign both petitions.

This petition has been drawn up by the graduate students of East Asian Languages and Cultures. It is similar in purpose to the earlier petition, but different in its orientation.

In this petition, the second and third paragraphs go into greater detail on how these budget cuts do not only affect EALC, they impact Berkeley as a whole and into the longterm. We want to emphasize how this issue is of far greater and long-term impact to Berkeley than simply a downsizing of EALC.

The two petitions' demands are also very different. The earlier petition demanded "NO BUDGET CUTS IN EAST ASIAN LANGUAGES AND CULTURES" in its final paragraph. This petition does not demand this. Please read its last paragraph carefully for what is it is asking the authorities to do.

Both petitions will be presented to the authorities, either separately or collectively. Again, everyone is strongly encouraged to sign both petitions.
